Last night my husband & I attended the Singapore Tatler Ball. These good folks have supported my philanthropic endeavors for years, including an award for community service in 2013. As such, I was of course delighted to attend the 36th anniversary of the Singapore Tatler Ball at Capella. Although we were initially intrigued by this year’s theme: Maximalism, I realise that we rocked it eventually, albeit by accident.

Last week I had about an hour to spare at the Keepers Singapore Designer Trunk Show . Fortunately, master collaborator Carolyn Kan was there to guide me through the roomsful of bespoke creations. In a flash, I scooped up a rope of pearls from her boutique, Carrie K, a fascinator from Eskpade & a black lace top from Vilry co. While there were other items in my shopping cart, these were the ones that I layered in for my maximalist outfit. Yesterday, I paired them with a Commes Des Garcons taffeta skirt & Dior boots.

Maximal speed was also required of stylists, Beno Lim & Maurice Chee, because I showed up late after work. Of relevance, before these wonder boys had worked their magic, several colleagues asked if I was going to a Halloween party. Clearly, I looked like some sort of corpse. Yet, in record time, Beno & Maurice resuscitated my hair & face while I gulped coffee & answered emails. After they were done, I looked alive again.
Maximum Nonsense
Dr Seuss said, “I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells.” Well, if Dr Seuss had been with Drs Iroshini, Bernard & me last night, he would’ve thought us pretty brainy & woke. As Dr Iro & I had weathered rather long work weeks, we were up for some silliness. Dr Bernard & I had just hosted a dialogue Discussing Jewellery And Watches Over Happy Hour. I’m always impressed by how this intellectual moves in the highest echelons in the world of watches, yet remains completely grounded.
Of course, the most fun I had was with my silly billy husband, Emil. At the Lladro booth with a life-sized sculpture, he pretended to fiddle with its nostril. At the Tiffany bench, he encouraged me to ham it up, going through a series of ridiculous poses. In fact, as I pore over these photos, it is suddenly crystal clear where the kids get it from. Look at this photo of us at my brother’s wedding. The nonsense gene is strong in this one.

Live Large
You know, sometimes when I give talks about mindfulness and wellness, I discuss the benefits of minimalism. We talk about making an effort to do various things: Declutter your life. Reduce distractions. Simplify.
Yet, there are certainly some obvious benefits to living large, in a big creative hive. For one, it might be paradoxically authentic. Last night I felt relaxed, touching base briefly with girlfriends and reconnecting with bros of yore. So, thank you, to the team from the Singapore Tatler Ball, for an awesome night of maximalism. Happy 36th!
